Every winter it's always the same. Black as night at 4.30pm for most of the UK population. Yes, farmers in Scotland can get up with some daylight at 5am, but the rest of the country has to suffer SAD for the next 4 months. Plus, studies show that traffic fatalities are reduced when there is extra afternoon daylight. There's more: A 2007 study estimated that winter daylight saving would prevent a 2% increase in average daily electricity consumption in Great Britain. That's good for the planet, as well as being good for you. So join the campaign. Give us back our hour! As The Times writes: http://bit.ly/1aAl9X We could scrap the end of summer time and leave the afternoons and evenings lighter and then, next spring, add another hour for the summer, what is known as Double British Summer Time. This was tried out from 1968 to 1971, but it left the mornings darker and met with protests from the early risers — farmers, builders and postmen. The switch was felt most keenly in Scotland, where sunrise in the far North was around 10am in midwinter. But if the Scottish Parliament were given the power to legislate on its own time zone, it could carry oncurrent system while the rest of the UK went an hour ahead. This is not as crazy as it might sound - until recently [2006], the state of Indiana allowed its local counties to set their own time zones. By sticking to summer time we might save ourselves a wave of depression, as well as synchronising Britain with most of Europe. And it would also save energy by burning less fuel in the lighter afternoons and evenings, and so cut 170,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, according to University of Cambridge scientists. In 2007 the US extended their summer time by four weeks to save energy, which was estimated to have saved about 0.5 per cent of the nation’s electricity per day, enough to power 100,000 households for a year. Farmers work by artificial light a lot of the time, morning and evening - even in summer - so the benefit of early daylight is not significant. Living Streets, a charity that puts pedestrians' interests first,says: http://bit.ly/1n11eW In September 2008, before we returned to Greenwich Mean Time, there were 577 pedestrians killed or seriously injured in Great Britain. "As winter set in and evenings got darker, this number shot up, with 720 pedestrians killed or seriously injured in October and 666 in November. "The most dangerous time on our roads is generally between 3pm and 6pm, when drivers are heading home for the day and children are making their way home from school. "The current situation actively makes this time period darker, lowering visibility and making streets more hazardous. "A vital hour of extra light in the evenings would have a major positive effect on communities around Britain.
